Abu Dhabi Committee on Tourism and Culture established

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, signed the law establishing the Abu Dhabi Committee on Tourism and Culture. The new department will deal with the preservation and management of cultural heritage, as well as the development of tourism in the emirate.

The committee is formed on the basis of two organizations that exist today, the Office of Cultural Heritage and the Office of Tourism of Abu Dhabi. The new structure will retain the powers, functions and staff of the two abolished departments. The creation of the committee is part of the Abu Dhabi tourism industry development plan, in which cultural heritage is central.

The new organization will deal with the regulation and supervision of the tourism market, including the establishment of standards and work plans for hotels, exhibitions and other tourist facilities. In addition, she will develop a guide to attract investment in the tourism industry of Abu Dhabi. In this regard, the department will organize conferences, festivals, exhibitions, issue licenses and create the Tourism Information Center of Abu Dhabi.

As for the cultural heritage sector, the new committee will be responsible for developing development priorities and programs in this area and their implementation in terms of preserving archaeological sites, organizing new excavations, creating and developing new museums, and financing scientific and creative initiatives in this area. The Committee will also organize cultural events and will provide assistance and support to institutions working in the field of preservation of historical heritage.

The committee included five members appointed by the Executive Board of Abu Dhabi. In accordance with the resolution of the council, Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnun Al Nahyan was appointed chairman of the new committee. Among the board members are Dr. Zaki Anwar Nasiba, Muhammad Halyaf Al Mazrui, Jasim Muhammad Al Darmaki and Team Leader Omayr Muhammad Al Muairi.
