A third of divorced couples in Abu Dhabi have not been married for a year

The number of marriages in Abu Dhabi decreased in 2016, and the number of divorces increased.

The number of people marrying decreased in Abu Dhabi in 2016 compared to 2015, while the divorce rate increased, an official government report said.

According to a report from the Abu Dhabi Statistics Center (SCAD), in 2016, 1922 cases of divorce were recorded compared to 1813 a year earlier, while only 5892 couples married compared to 6037 in the same period a year earlier.

In addition, more than half of failed marriages in Abu Dhabi lasted no more than three years. More than 28 percent of couples divorced last year have not been married for a year.

Reasons for divorce include infidelity, lack of communication or poor relationships, job loss or financial turmoil, social networks, religious and cultural differences, and unjustified expectations.

Nasser Al Riyami, a psychologist at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi, said: “Many young people have high hopes for marriage regarding satisfaction, good relations with spouses and a luxurious lifestyle. When they don’t get it, many end up going for divorce. "

He said that another reason for the growth of divorces is the lack of communication between spouses.

Dr. Dolly Hubbal, a clinical psychologist and department head at Universal Hospital, said many marriages end in divorce due to extramarital affairs.
