Gulf News editor may be executed for killing wife in Dubai

A former Gulf News employee in Dubai claims to have no intention of killing his wife.

Dubai police found evidence that Briton Francis Matthew, a former Gulf News editor, killed his wife after several weeks of quarreling.

The accused himself states that he did not intend to kill his wife, despite the evidence. The 61-year-old expat pleaded not guilty to a murder in a Dubai court in September.

According to the case file, the man hit the head twice with a hammer after a quarrel on July 4 at the couple’s villa in Umm Suqeim.

In court last Sunday, three police officers testified that, apparently, Matthew followed his wife into the room and intentionally hit her with a hammer after several weeks of quarrels because the couple moved to cheaper and smaller housing.

The court was adjourned until December 17. Francis Matthew is being asked for a death sentence.
