Dubai builder taxed maintenance staff in their buildings

A developer from Dubai began to charge money with janitors for accessing the apartments of residents of their buildings.

Cleaners, workers, and other maintenance staff now have to pay 20 dirhams ($ US 5.45) per day for access to their clients' apartments and villas in Dubai, who live in Damac Properties.

Last week, residents received emails from the management company informing them of the new rules.

“When paid to third-party service providers, they’ll be issued a work permit that will allow them to access the property,” said Neil McLaughlin, Damac’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications.

According to the developer, this step is aimed at limiting the activities of unscrupulous suppliers and improving security: only persons licensed and registered with local authorities will receive permission.

Neil McLaughlin emphasized that residents and owners of apartments and villas should not pay extra for cleaning and maintenance services provided by external suppliers.

He also said that the new rules do not apply to couriers, food suppliers, trainers and other non-maintenance personnel.
