The largest event in the world of sailing in Dubai, the Al Gaffal sailing regatta will again be held in May next year, closing the marine sports season in the emirate. This regatta, first held in 1991, has become a traditional event that symbolizes Dubai's maritime traditions.
All crew members must be Emirates, and only sailing dhows (traditional Arab boats) 18 meters long are allowed to compete. The regatta starts on Sir Bu Nair Island and finishes in Dubai at the Burj Al Arab Hotel. The prize fund of the regatta is several million dirhams. According to tradition, hundreds of boats participate in the race, which turns the regatta into a spectacular sight.
