New UAE law: up to 10 years in prison for insulting religion

UAE NEW ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAW PROVIDES CRIMINAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR ATTEMPTING RELIGION OR NATIONALITY (as well as caste, religion, race, or ethnicity) in spoken and written language, books, brochures, and social media.
The corresponding decree was signed by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Thus, the new law provides for punishment for any actions or words that may qualify as inciting religious hatred, hatred and intolerance. The law also contains responsibility for designating representatives of other religious groups or individuals with the words “pagan,” “atheist,” and “unbeliever.” The law is designed to create a tolerant environment for all residents of the country and is aimed at protecting people, regardless of their origin, race or belief. Penalties for breaking the law range from 50 thousand (US $ 13.7 thousand) to 2 million dirhams (US $ 548 thousand), as well as imprisonment for a term of 6 months from 10 years.

Anti-discrimination law prohibits any action that may be considered an insult to God, prophets or apostles, scriptures, religious and religious buildings, cemeteries. The law condemns any acts or words that contain hate speech or encourage discrimination, including on the Internet, in print and electronic media. It also punishes all forms of vandalism in relation to religious rituals, holy places and symbols.

The provisions of the law apply to both individuals and groups of individuals. It is forbidden to hold public events and conferences, as well as support organizations whose actions can be aimed at encouraging discrimination, as well as inciting hatred and hatred.
