Since 1991, the Al-Ghaffal race has become the main water sport event in Dubai. Returning to the time of catching pearls, this race for 60-foot (18-meter) ships is a source of great pride for all those who take part in it.
The finals of the 2018-2019 water sports race season, organized by the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC), are held exclusively in the Emirates.
Many people in the Emirates grew up in pearl trading families. The race was organized in honor of these brave divers from the Emirates, who played a key role in the development of Dubai as an international trading port. Participating in the race, young generations contribute to the preservation of skills and traditions, paying tribute to their ancestors.
The race begins at 5:30 in the morning and runs along a long route, covering the iconic sights of the Dubai coastline. You can watch the race from the coastline or use one of the specially chartered ferries from which you can watch what is happening nearby.
